United Airlines launched its new nonstop route from Kahului Airport to Newark, N.J., on Thursday, making it the only nonstop flight from Maui to the East Coast.

The airline hosted a small gate-side celebration on Thursday afternoon in Kahului for the inaugural flight with New York-themed decorations, hula, music and small giveaways for customers. The Newark Liberty International Airport is located just outside of New York City.

United said the flight will be operated with a Boeing 767-300ER aircraft, which features 46 business class all-aisle-access seating and 22 United Premium Plus seats.

Flights between Kahului and Newark operate Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, with departures from Newark at 8:10 a.m. and departures from Kahului at 2:40 p.m., according to United’s website.

With Hawaii still requiring trans-Pacific travelers to test negative for COVID-19 in order to bypass quarantine, United announced earlier this year that customers traveling to Hawaii can show their results before boarding to save time and skip document screening lines upon arrival. The airline offers approved COVID-19 tests for all customers traveling to Hawaii and recently introduced a new digital solution, “The Travel Ready Center,” where customers can review COVID-19 entry requirements, find local testing options and upload any required testing and vaccination records for travel at www.united.com/en/us/travelreadycenter.
