October has an interesting mix of theatrical and OTT movie releases. The month sees a line-up of big-budget Bollywood films and auteur-backed straight-to-streaming titles alike. Among the most-anticipated upcoming Hindi movies is Ganapath. The film starring Tiger Shroff, Kriti Sanon and Amitabh Bachchan is a sci-fi flick that promises cinematic visuals. The list of Hollywood releases garnering headlines is led by Killers of the Flower Moon with Martin Scorsese in the director’s chair. Tamil-language film Leo led by Vijay arrives amidst fan anticipation and advance bookings if reports are to be believed. Meanwhile, the Korean revenge drama Ballerina which arrived on OTT, took over in early October.Here are the top trending movies of this month:
Bollywood
Khufiya
Vishal Bhardwaj’s Khufiya was in the making for a while. The film features an ensemble cast of versatile actors including Ali Fazal, Wamiqa Gabbi and Tabu. The film is an espionage thriller based on Amar Bhushan's Escape to Nowhere. It follows a R&AW operative who is tasked with finding a mole within the unit. The film has some standout performances including a stunning introduction sequence featuring Gabbi who collaborated with Bhardwaj for the second time this year.

Mission Raniganj
Based on Jaswant Singh Gill, a mining engineer who rescued around 65 trapped miners at the Raniganj Coalfields in 1989, Mission Raniganj is a biopic film led by Akshay Kumar. The film made headlines not just for its gripping premise but for its track Keemti. It features Parineeti Chopra as the characters express their love for each other. The music video which arrived before the film’s release had fans’ attention.

Ganapath
The catalogue of Bollywood sci-fi films is only growing by the day. The next VFX-heavy film arriving in cinemas releases in October. Directed by Vikas Bahl, the film starring Tiger Shroff, Kriti Sanon and Amitabh Bachchan is set in a dystopian future. It revolves around a vigilante who sets out to take down an evil empire that has left his people in fear. The trailer teases some good-looking shots that include adrenaline-pumping action sequences. Another highlight of the film is that it marks the onscreen reunion of Kriti and Tiger after Heropanti and Heropanti 2 in which the actress made a cameo appearance.
Thank You For Coming
Rhea Kapoor’s Thank You For Coming reportedly made waves at the Toronto International Film Festival where it premiered before arriving in theatres. The film featured an ensemble cast including Bhumi Pednekar, Shehnaaz Gill, Kusha Kapila, Shibani Bedi, Anil Kapoor and others. It focused on the female perspective and openly spoke about female orgasms. The plot follows Kanika, a woman who has never experienced an orgasm. Along with her friends, she navigates the ups and downs of womanhood.

Killers of the Flower Moon
After The Irishman which arrived in 2019, director Martin Scorsese is back with his next. Killers of the Flower Moon is his star-studded epic Western. The film features a cast full of A-listers including Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Lily Gladstone, Jesse Plemons and others. The film’s official synopsis reads, “At the turn of the 20th century, oil brought a fortune to the Osage Nation, who became some of the richest people in the world overnight. The wealth of these Native Americans immediately attracted white interlopers, who manipulated, extorted, and stole as much Osage money as they could before resorting to murder.”

The Exorcist: Believer
This has been a busy year for horror films. After the release of the latest Saw movie, The Exorcist: Believer. The film directed by David Gordon Green opened to mixed reviews but certainly had audiences talking. Its plot follows a single father who has to confront an evil entity after his daughter and her friend end up showing signs of demonic possession. In his desperation, he reaches out to the only person who has witnessed the phenomenon. The film features Ellen Burstyn who reprises her role as Chris MacNeil, the mother of the possessed Regan MacNeil. The actress earned the Academy Award in the Best Actress category for her role in the original film.
South
Leo
Tamil-language action thriller Leo is one of the most talked about movies of October. Buzz around the film started months ago when the intriguing first poster was unveiled. The film directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj features Vijay in the lead role. In the film, the actor plays Parthi, a mild-mannered cafe owner with a sketchy past. He gets targeted by gangsters who trigger his violent side. The film’s trailer teased lots of action and early reviews have been creating a stir for a while now. It reportedly raked in big numbers in advance bookings worldwide.

Tiger Nageswara Rao
Before we meet Salman Khan’s Tiger in Tiger 3, fans will witness Ravi Teja’s upcoming film Tiger Nageswar Rao. The Telugu-language film which arrives this week is written and directed by Vamsee. The film also features Anupam Kher, Jisshu Sengupta and Gayatri Bhardwaj in pivotal roles. Set in the 1970s, it centres on a thief and local legend who orchestrates heists and applies his genius methods to one-up the cops.
Korean
Ballerina
While the list of Korean movies released on OTT in India is slim, Ballerina is worth mentioning. The revenge thriller film directed by Lee Chung-hyun features Jeon Jong-seo, Kim Ji-hoon and Park Yu-rim in pivotal roles. It sees the lead character Jang Ok-ju, a woman who used to be a bodyguard for VIP clients. When her best friend is found dead, she sets out to find the sex trafficker who victimised her by filming her video and extorting money. Revenge dramas are a popular genre for K-drama fans who have been treated to shows like The Glory just earlier this year.
