In a big step towards addressing gender biases in the armed forces, the Army has decided to induct women into military police. Currently, women are recruited for selected roles in medical, education, legal, signals and engineering wings, and only as officers.

Army chief Bipin Rawat had also hinted at women being deployed in such situation when he announced that as a first step, women will be inducted into the military police before being sent for combat.
Initially, a batch of 800 women will be inducted, targeting 52 recruitments a year.

The subject of women donning the battle fatigues has been a sticky one, with a section of the Army opposed to it in the past.
Last year, the Air Force commissioned three women as fighter pilots for the first time.
